In another attempt to monetize YouTube, Google has decided to start showing so called Sponsored Videos on the YouTube video search result pages. This ‘Video AdWords’ scheme is ideal if you have video content you want people to see, but what are the real possibilities for affiliate advertisers ?

The question is of course : who wants to pay someone for watching their video ? Taking into account that as a video publisher you can also earn money from the advertisements next to and inside your videos, you might think it could be interesting to pump some more traffic to your channel this way. This then should translate in a higher income from advertising. But you’d have to be a video producer to begin with, and the cost probably won’t be covered by your extra profit.

Sponsored Videos works similar to AdWords, in that you have to bid on keywords, which then results in your video being shown on the video results pages when people search for these keywords. You can of course set your maximum budget, maximum daily spend, and so on.

The problem with the system is people are shown videos. This means you’ll have to make a video in order to have something to show in the first place. With AdWords all you have to do is provide some words and a link to a website where the actual selling/lead generating action can take place. In this case the question remains how you can make money just from someone watching your video.

If you were able to produce videos that have ads embedded, and these ads made you a whole lot of money if they got clicked, it could be possible in theory to earn money from getting these videos watched by paying people to do so. But with clickthrough on video ads low as it is right now, this way of working is practically impossible to turn profitable.

Obviously Sponsored Videos could be a way to drive some extra traffic to a new movie trailer, and you can even imagine other companies starting to produce videos about their products in order to promote them, but from an affiliate point of view the system doesn’t offer much possibilities. The problem is mainly that only Google can make money from the clicks on the videos. Something really special is going to have to happen in your Sponsored Video if you want it to have repercussions somewhere else on the web.
