MySpace releases MyAds PDF Print E-mail

Similar to Facebook’s ad service, Myspace releases MyAds, it’s system for displaying targeted ads across it’s network. The main difference with Facebook is that Myspace delivers total transparency about the system, as well as the possibility for Myspace users to opt-out of it.

MyAds allows you to reach a specific audience on MySpace, as well as on other news Corp. sites. Ads can be targeted to specific regions, user data such as sex, age, but also interests, and in general any word appearing in a Myspace profile ( including pictures, videos etc.). So if for example you’re a bar, club or event organisation, you’ll be able to advertise to people in your region with a particular musical taste.

In Europe Myspace is predominantly used by bands to have some place to let the world know about their music. In the US it’s also more of a social networking site, used for getting to know new people. The difference in usage of the website between the continents of course means that the promotional possibilities differ somewhat.

Last fall Facebook launched an advertising service called Beacon, which used information about what the Facebook users did when they were online. The release created a small privacy uproar, and Facebook’s lack of transparency about the system generated a lot of negative criticism. Myspace has learned from this by offering total transparency about how the system works, but, more importantly, also a way for it’s users to opt-out of getting served these targeted ads.

The minimum amount an advertiser can spend on MyAds is 25 USD. You only pay when someone clicks on your ad, with a minimum of 0.25 USD per click. The price is regulated by a bidding system, and depends for example on the popularity of the keyword you’re bidding on. There are no activation fees to be paid, so the only thing you’ll pay for are clicks. You can choose between text ads, image ads and a combination of the two.

Next to Facebook’s ad platform, having the possibility to specifically target your audience on Myspace is good news for advertisers and affiliate marketeers. Better targeting means that if someone clicks your ad, chances are much higher they’ll be actually interested in what you have to offer. If MyAds manages to keep their minimum clickprice stable, it will definitely become a standard affiliate marketing tool.
