This week Google released Insights for Search. With this expansion to Google Trends, online marketeers using search can derive more information and expand their capabilities.

Google Insights for Search is designed to let anyone interested understand and analyse search behaviour. A world heat map also graphically displays search volume and regional interest. As search is the number one traffic source for most websites, Google Insights is a valuable tool that can be put to work in a lot of ways to optimise your online efforts.

After entering a search term into Google Insights, The program will deliver you historical and regional search volume patterns, as well as top related searches and ‘rising’ related searches.
The possibility also exists to compare multiple search terms inside industry categories, a region or a timeframe. The separation into industry categories is helpful when you for instance are looking to disambiguate search data for metal, the material, as opposed to metal  the musical genre.

The time range analysis allows you to notice seasonal effects on search volumes and monitor overall trends, while the regional data can for example reveal clusters of target customers. For brands the search volumes are an indicator for their strength, which can help stores, resellers and so on to decide how much energy to invest in different brands.

Google Insights can also be used to choose how to advertise your products or services, based on what people are actually searching for. It allows you to examine things associated with your own brand and that of your competitors, which in turn can help differentiate your marketing approach. The tool can also be used to examine new markets before entering them.

Even the success of an advertising campaign can be measured if you are able to find related terms specifically for the campaign, and then look at the search volumes for those terms before and after the start of the campaign.

However, the main domain where all this data can be put to use is AdWords of course. Anyone using Adwords to either promote campaigns or by directly earning money from it by displaying AdSense blocks, will now be able to further finetune their efforts.
