By the end of of 2006, all affiliates should have made the transition to the new text links. We believe CJ forgot that a couple of key-issues may cause for even more trouble... Issues with CJ Javascript1. Main issue sems to be the lack of possibilities to configure the style & presentation of the links. If you are not able to implement text links in a savvy way, you may be even better off with google adsense... Affiliates that make a living off the net, know how they need to integrate these links into their site. CJ is now closing that option. 2. The key reason for this change, is that CJ wants to provide merchants with an increased control over the promotion of their sites, brands and products. From a merchant point of view this may seem understandable and can be defended as long as there are people dedicated to building affiliate relations and hear their concerns. Reality however, is a bit different: it shows that very few merchants have a dedicated affiliate manager. Increased control may thus mean less revenue. 3. A third issue seems to be the technicalities of this change: apart from the page load time which will increase, especially if someone integrates a lot of links, there is another issue: an increasing amount of internet users have their javascript settings turned off as they are concerned with security issues. Obviously, when this is the case, both visitor and affiliate will be worse off: the affiliate will not be able to generate revenue while the user will see an inferior version of the content: imagine an article with a bunch of text links intertwined: the user will see an article where words or parts of phrases will just be missing. ConclusionIt's still to be seen how this sudden change will help the relevant parties in play: our conviction is that both merchants and affiliates will further flee into looking for alternative networks. To us, CJ has inflicted serous damage to its business and may well have prevented this.
